The vocabulary used to describe modern art is often complicated and full of jargon. Anger, acceptance or simple indifference; either so much is said of so little or little is said of much. When words fail me, as they often do these days, I reach for the stroke of a paintbrush to voice the subjective and emotional expression of my feelings. I usually draw inspiration from nothing much at all other than a well-intentioned thought. Other times I paint without planning and the artwork flows naturally. I exploit different colors and textures for their expressive potential to create a sense of harmony, a visual poetry, to represent the inner worlds of emotion, mood and intellect. I find the process of painting to be as much an art as the resulting painting itself. I paint to discover, to rediscover myself, to work through my grief, to find what is truly mine. The act of painting becomes a tool I use to put order to myself, to slow down the flood of thoughts and ideas that threaten to overwhelm. My obsessive struggle to make sense of the changing world around me can only be expressed in an abstract exploration of inorganic experiences blending with color, texture, light and shape. Although interpretive in many ways, my paintings are nothing more than simple landscapes, loud shirts, basic mathematics, sailor tattoos, and maps to my house. I use luminous colors, simple shapes, random cartoons, metal leaf and texture to convey the essence of a marshy beach, a tall building, a fast car, algebra…if you relax a bit and look hard enough you’ll see the map that I’ve carefully drawn – it’s full of colorful expressions on the way to my house and you’re invited. Biography: Michelle Stewart began her foray into the world of art as a participant observer on the periphery of New York City’s Lower East Side performance art scene of the early nineties. Acting as the accidental under-study she became an occasional player in various productions at the Kitchen, the Altar’s Tattooed Love Child, and the Pyramid Club. Since those early dilettante days her craft has expanded to include the arts of photography, illustration and painting. When the sun is shining she stands on street corners in crowded cities watching the people walking by. Armed with toy cameras to document the world around her she collects images of this little thing or that. On rainy days she likes to sling paint onto things and calls it art. And it goes like this...
